What Is Warrior Cats?Well if you are visiting this website, chances are you already know about Warrior Cats. However if you happen not to know here is a quick summary of what Warrior Cats is.
Warrior Cats is a top selling children's book series. It began in 2003 and is still going strong today spanning four main series, and several super editions, field guides, English mangas, eBooks and short stories.
What is Warrior Cats about? The story follows the lives of feral / wild cats (regular cats, not their big cat cousins). It is based around four Clans who live together in their own territories side by side as rivals. these Clans are known as ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan and ShadowClan. Each Clan has many members of various titles / ranks, such as Warriors, Elders and of course the Clan Leader (see the Ranks Page for more information). The story mostly comes from the perspective of ThunderClan, and each of the main series follows one or more of ThunderClan's members as the main protagonist(s). The story simply tells about their lives from the simple day to day struggles to hunt for their Clan and fight off rival Clans and other enemies who may threaten their borders while always following the 'Warrior Code' to the more mysterious adventures such as those which follow a prophecy sent by their dead Warrior ancestors which they know as StarClan. The story tells of many exciting adventures and travels, as well as many horrible battles. There is happiness, sadness, glory, disaster, heroes, betrayers and much more.
For such a simple concept Warrior Cats has become one of the worlds most popular children's series and for good reason. Warrior Cats is a exciting series and despite being a children's series can be enjoyed by all ages, especially if you are a fan of cats. So if you are looking for an exciting adventure story of survival with its fair mix of mystery and even fantasy, Warrior Cats is defiantly worth a try.
How did Warrior Cats Begin? The life of Warrior Cats began when Victoria Holmes was asked by her employer; London based firm Working Partners to create a story about cats, as they felt their was space in the market for it. Working Partners is a company that creates original fiction series for publishers, and for Warrior Cats they teamed up with the publisher HarperCollins.
The story was originally intended to be a stand alone book, however the idea soon expanded and was made into a series simply known as Warriors, or more specifically referred to as The Original Series beginning with the first book Into The Wild back in 2003. Over time this expanded into the huge series it is today, spanning four main series, several super editions, field guides, English mangas, eBooks and short stories.
As Warriors came to life, Victoria Holmes took the driving seat as the main story developer, however was also teamed up with fellow British authors Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry who also worked for Working Partners, and later the American author Tui T. Sutherland (however she mainly worked on their second project Seeker Bears). However with several authors working on the books, they needed a pseudonym so that the books could be kept together on the shelf. The name Erin Hunter was then chosen as 'hunter' worked with the feral theme of the books and they wanted the books to be close to the author Brian Jacques, an author they were fond of who was famous for his animal series 'Redwall'.
To read more about the authors, please see the Authors page.
The series was first released in the United Kingdom and the USA but has since been released in many places around the world. Warriors is bow also sold directly in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Korea and Germany. Translated versions from English into other languages are also sold in Czech, Lithuanian, Finnish, Japanese, French, Russian, Chinese and Korean. Many of these country's have also had author tours by Victoria Holmes set up by HarperCollins.
